Cosmo Energy Holdings Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Cosmo Energy") today announced that Laffan Refinery Co., Ltd. 2 (hereinafter referred to as "the Refinery) has commenced production following its recent completion.
The Refinery, in which Cosmo Energy holds a minority interest, broke ground in April 2014 and is located in Qatar's Ras Laffan Industrial City next to Laffan Refinery Co., Ltd. 1, which opened in 2009. It is the second condensate refinery in Qatar with a total processing capacity of 146,000 barrels per stream day (bpsd).
In line with the strategy set out by the State of Qatar, the condensate produced at Qatar North Field, the largest single non-associated natural gas field in the world, will be used as feedstock at the two refineries to create a higher added-value chain. The resulting petroleum products will be shipped both domestically and internationally.
The Refinery has a newly built diesel hydrotreater (DHT), and the ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) produced there will be consumed in the expanding domestic market, thereby helping to alleviate the impact that diesel has on the environment in Qatar. Going forward, both refineries will improve operational efficiency by sharing desulphurization equipment as well as berths and tanks.
Cosmo Energy has been purchasing crude oil from Qatar since the 1970s, and has been developing and producing crude oil in the country via Qatar Petroleum Development Co., Ltd. (Cosmo Energy holds a 75.0% stake) and United Petroleum Development Co., Ltd. (Cosmo Energy holds a 45% stake). Through refining activities at both refineries, Cosmo Energy will further strengthen its relationship with Qatar and continue to develop its operational presence the country.
