Cosmo Oil Co., Ltd. (hereafter “Cosmo Oil”) and SAFFAIRE SKY ENERGY LLC (hereafter, “SAFFAIRE SKY ENERGY”), in cooperation with Sakai City, hosted a tour of the Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production unit at Cosmo Oil’s Sakai Refinery for Sakai City elementary school students in grades four to six. About 30 children selected by lottery took part, observing the production process for used cooking oil-derived domestic SAF while learning about the importance of energy supply and building a recycling-oriented society.

Cosmo Oil, JGC HOLDINGS CORPORATION, and REVO International Inc. entered into an agreement with Sakai City in November 20241. The agreement, titled Agreement on Collaboration and Cooperation in Promoting the Recycling of Used Cooking Oil Toward the Development of a Sustainable Society, seeks to advance the conversion of used cooking oil into feedstock for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and other such products. The tour aimed to give local children a hands-on learning opportunity during their visit to the domestic SAF production unit in Sakai City, the first facility in Japan to mass produce SAF.
After learning basic facts about SAF, the participating children simulated the used cooking oil recycling process by collecting oil in plastic bottles and placing them into a collection box. They then toured the refinery by bus, viewing the SAF production unit and oil receiving facility up close, and posed for a commemorative photo in front of the approximately 50-meter-tall production unit.
Recognizing decarbonization and the realization of a recycling-oriented society as key priorities, the Cosmo Energy Group and SAFFAIRE SKY ENERGY remain committed to jointly undertaking initiatives that contribute to the decarbonization of the aviation industry. In addition, the two parties will strengthen the SAF supply chain in cooperation with Sakai City and other municipalities nationwide.

■ About the SAF Production Business
The SAF produced by SAFFAIRE SKY ENERGY at Cosmo Oil's Sakai Refinery was commercialized following the receipt of a New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) subsidy in 2021², aimed at establishing a supply chain model for SAF production from domestically sourced used cooking oil. The first domestic SAF to be mass produced in Japan, the fuel is being supplied to airlines via the Cosmo Energy Group from FY2025, and has obtained ISCC CORSIA and ISCC EU certifications³. These certifications are part of the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) initiative, which recognizes compliance with international standards for sustainable products, and serve as proof of the fuel's environmental value. SAFFAIRE SKY ENERGY is a tripartite joint venture formed in 2022 by Cosmo Oil, JGC, and REVO International.
