Cosmo Energy Group Supplies Domestic SAF to JASDF's Blue Impulse Aerobatic Team ~For Use in Demonstration Flight Scheduled for September 19~

Cosmo Oil Marketing Co., Ltd. (hereafter, “Cosmo Oil Marketing”), a subsidiary of Cosmo Energy Holdings Co., Ltd., is pleased to announce that it has supplied domestic Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) to the Japan Air Self-Defense Force’s (JASDF) Blue Impulse aerobatic team via the Aichi Prefectural Government and the City of Nagoya¹. The team is scheduled to conduct a demonstration flight², powered by SAF, over Aichi Prefecture on Saturday, September 19, 2026. This marks the third time that the Cosmo Energy Group has supplied SAF to Blue Impulse. If the demonstration flight goes ahead as planned, it will be the first such flight by the team to be powered by domestic SAF supplied by the Group as the two previously scheduled flights were cancelled.

The use of domestic SAF for this Blue Impulse aerobatic team demonstration flight is expected to showcase Japan’s commitment to advancing SAF adoption both domestically and internationally, while building momentum toward decarbonization in the aviation sector, the effective use of domestic resources, and the realization of a recycling-oriented society.

The SAF supplied to Blue Impulse was commercialized following the receipt of a New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) subsidy³ in 2021, aimed at establishing a supply chain model for SAF production from domestically sourced used cooking oil. It is the first SAF to be mass produced in Japan and has obtained ISCC CORSIA and ISCC EU certifications⁴, which recognize compliance with international standards for sustainable products. The fuel was produced by SAFFAIRE SKY ENERGY LLC, a joint venture formed by Cosmo Oil Co., Ltd., JGC HOLDINGS CORPORATION, and REVO International Inc., and has been supplied to airlines and other customers via the Cosmo Energy Group since FY2025. SAFFAIRE SKY ENERGY’s SAF production unit is located on the premises of Cosmo Oil’s Sakai Refinery in Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture, and is advancing the societal uptake of SAF produced using domestically sourced used cooking oil as a feedstock.

The Cosmo Energy Group has worked to establish a supply chain to deliver Japan’s first domestic SAF, with the goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050. The Group is also helping build social momentum for SAF through initiatives such as an ongoing pilot program to collect used household cooking oil at service stations for repurposing into SAF feedstock.

The Blue Impulse aerobatic team performs demonstration flights at JASDF air shows and national events, aiming to raise public awareness of the JASDF. The team is officially known as the 11th Squadron and belongs to the 4th Air Wing based at Matsushima Air Base in Miyagi Prefecture. Characterized by the distinctive blue and white paint of its aircraft, the team is renowned for its multi-aircraft aerial formations and other maneuvers.
