Organized in cooperation with the C.W. Nicol Afan Woodland Trust (hereafter, “the Afan Woodland Trust”), the Tour welcomed 14 Eco members, who experienced the environmental conservation activities supported by the Fund through a walk in Afan Woodland and forest restoration work.
The late writer and environmentalist C.W. Nicol began forest restoration efforts at Afan Woodland in 1986, with the aim of restoring it to its original glory as a biodiverse Japanese forest. Since fiscal 2014, the Fund has supported the Afan Woodland Trust’s activities, promoting forest restoration that helps the region’s various native plants and animals thrive.
The day started at the Afan Center with an introduction to the activities of both the Fund and the Afan Woodland Trust, as well as the restoration work that the two organizations have undertaken to date. This was followed by a walk through the forest, where Afan Woodland Trust staff explained how ongoing human intervention has shaped the forest and introduced participants to the diverse organisms that inhabit it. Participants also tried their hand at brush-clearing work, a forest restoration activity, around a pond in the woodland to protect the aquatic ecosystem and surrounding environment.
Following the activity, participants reflected on the day and exchanged views on the importance of ongoing forest restoration, the value of protecting habitats that sustain biodiversity, and what individuals can do.
■Feedback from Participants
| ・ | “The forest was truly wonderful. I hope to see more initiatives like this throughout Japan.” |
| ・ | “I came to appreciate firsthand the importance of ongoing environmental conservation activities to maintain forest environments.” |
| ・ | “Although I cannot participate frequently in forest restoration work, I would like to continue contributing through donations.” |
| ・ | “I sincerely hope that more people will see the importance of these activities and that their support will become a powerful force.” |
Looking ahead, the Company remains committed to promoting wider participation in environmental conservation activities, in cooperation with Eco members and supporting organizations, as well as to helping ensure that our rich natural environment is preserved for future generations.
