THE GLOBAL COMPACT

Overview of the Global Compact

Seeking to promote global sustainability, the Global Compact consists of ten principles endorsed by the United Nations. Companies are encouraged to practice these principles in order to help solve the various issues facing the international community, including poverty, human rights, and environment conservation. UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan proposed the initiative at the World Economic Forum in January 1999, and it was launched in July 2000.

  • The Global Compact is proposed by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan at the World Economic Forum held in Davos, Switzerland, in January 1999, and is officially launched at the UN Headquarters in New York in July 2000.
  • The principles are put together by the United Nations for companies to follow in order to help realize a sustainable society and solve various problems facing the international community, including poverty, human rights, and environment conservation.
  • This marks the first time the United Nations directly appeals to global corporations, while recognizing them as important members of the international community.
